Anybody have time for some readin'?
« Thread Started on Dec 17, 2008, 3:36am »

As I sit here not working on my finals, I wonder, whatever shall I read for fun during my break. Any ideas anyone? I've read Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" series, and I enjoy anything along that vein. I'm game for pretty much anything.

Man, I really don't want to work on this final.

I've never read "Ender's Game," so I can't suggest anything similar (at least on purpose, haha) but I've been reading Stephen King's Dark Tower series recently, and I've been loving that. I've also recently been looking into some classic books, like Fahrenheit 451, 1984, As I Lay Dying, and Heart of Darkness (all of which I was SUPPOSED to read during high school, but didn't care to till recently...) I've been reading a lot more than usual lately, and if I stumble upon anything fantastic I'll be sure to bring it up.

I will add "Dark Tower" to my list. I haven't picked up a Stephen King novel for... I'm not sure how long, but I'll definitely look into it. Thanks!

Yeah, I've only finished the second book (out of 7, I think) but so far I love it. It's supposed to be King's preeminent work, but it doesn't remind me of anything else I've read by him, really.
You mentioned the "Ender's Game" series; what's that about? I've heard of it, but never had a chance to read it myself.

It's set in the future after a war with an alien race referred to as "Buggers." Ender Wiggin is a kid who is drafted into a sort of military training program that is intended to create leaders against the next great war, which is estimated to happen in the future. What I appreciated the most when I first got started reading was the chapter set-up. The "game" part of "Ender's Game" is this rather intriguing version of laser tag that they play and which is the center of the entire training program. The rest of the series follow Ender as he gets older, and then there's also an offshoot of "Ender's Game" that stars one of the secondary characters of the series.

I'm not sure if Card planned it, although it wouldn't suprise me if he had, but the chapters start out really short and then get progressively longer, so I felt like I was making real headway at first, and then as I got drawn into the story, I didn't notice that the chapters were getting longer because I was so enthralled.

Also, since the hero was a kid who was a genius, and I was a bit younger when I first read it, I was pretty sure that I was somehow related to Ender--probably his great great great grandfather, or something.

I suggest H. Ryder Hagar's King Solomon's Mines. It is a riproaring tale of adventure and danger on the African track with hunter Alan Quatermain and friends as they search for a fellow's brother and the fabled mines of King Solomon.

So I read Ender's Game, thank for the tip Joe, it was amazing (and all the sequels were pretty cool too, though I got bored of the Shadow series pretty quick). It inspired me to write my own sci-fi stories, which hasn't actually happened yet...
I'll have to check out King Solomon's Mines. I thought Alan Quatermain was pretty awesome in the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, so hopefully I'd enjoy King Solomon's Mines, lol.
I've been reading a series called the Dresden Files (which spawned a show on the Sci-Fi channel, so some of you may have seen the show). It's about a wizard named Harry Dresden and he does kind of freelance detective work. Mainly I just think the main character/narrator is cool and is pretty easy to relate to. Plus the action and adventure part is well written, and keeps you hooked.

If you do decide to start your own story, I would love to read it, even if it's not a finished product. I started my own sci-fi a while ago, and I decided to mix some fantasy in, too. I re-read what I wrote, and I realized that it was pretty terrible, but since restarting, I have felt better about the whole thing. It's still far from finished, but I have a few ideas for some twists and whatnot, and the premise isn't too far from mainstream.

Awesome. Maybe I'll send you something when I've got something written. I wanna do a series of short stories, since I've got many ideas in my head. Right now I'm working on a zombie story, which I can classify as sci-fi because it's about a guy trying to figure out what started it and such, kinda like how I Am Legend was technically a sci-fi story in a sense.... But I also have ideas for "traditional" sci fi with space travel and aliens and time travel and yadda yadda yadda.
I'd love to read your story. I've been looking for a sci-fi/fantasy mix but I haven't found any so far, so that would be pretty cool.

It's on my laptop, so I'll have to fire the thing up and find the story. I think I'll also have to reread it just to make sure it isn't too craptacular.

It's official: it's truly bad. I even made notes to myself when I was writing it to fix it. Such comments as "Awkward" and "forced" run rampant through the story, and right now it's only 17 (novel) pages long, which is to say, 1.5 spacing with book page margins rather than MS Word margins. It really needs to be retooled. The Prologue isn't as bad as it could be, so I could send you that...

Ah, I gave up on my own attempts at writing fiction a while back. I have the material... heck, my friend and I have a set of characters who's backstory alone could fill a book, but I came to realize I'm better at just thinking up individual ideas and scenes themselves than stringing them together in a coherent narrative. It'd just turn into a big mess whenever I'd try to organize it.

For now I just use the ideas in RPs or apply it to other media, like drawing. Though I haven't been doing much of that lately either.... ~sigh~ Creativity blocks suck. >>

I sent it to you: did you read it? If you had the stomach to skip to the end, you probably saw my outline for the whole thing. As you could see, I still needed to rewrite a lot of the story so that if fit into the outline.
